I'm not sure what readers thought would happen next, but I'm pretty sure a parody of Megaman Battle Network wasn't it. The thing was, I knew I wanted to go into X's head, and the sprites from the Battle Network games seemed rather appropriate. I think they're technically 32-bit sprites, but far different from the Playstation games. In case anyone's wondering, I took the hair from one of the human characters and just slapped it on MegamanEXE's body.
