Given that I'd just had George thinking about how his powers won't work on Bob, the complete lack of effect on Bob shouldn't have come as a surprise. And I suppose readers wouldn't really think that George would be smart enough to be using his powers for some other purpose, even though it was the same comic where George outright mentioned the effect of lightning on time machines.
