I think many readers were suddenly aware of just how bad it was that Mike was being assimilated. X already has the ability to assimilate remotely, more or less thanks to Ran, and with access to humans, he's not another 7 billion people to assimilate. I mean, it really doesn't get much worse than that, does it?
