The best part about having an evil character that lies all the time is that even when he's telling the truth, no one knows it. I suppose one could speculate that this is all part of the Author and Helmut's bet, but I don't think that happened until after the Helmeted Author had been defeated and banished to the White Space. So, at this point, his motivation really was just to destroy other universes.
