I don't know if there's any official reason Dr. Light called him Mega Man X. I think in the official storyline, X is an upgraded version of the original Mega Man, but why 'X'? Is he the tenth iteration? I distinctly remember Capcom trying to make it very clear that Megaman X was not Megaman 10. Most likely, it was just the 90's, when everything was totally Xtreme!* *Megaman Xtreme being the Game Boy port of Megaman X.
