So, really, the whole point of this subplot was to remind the reader about how Zero is going to ultimately kill everyone during the Cataclysm. I'm not sure how that was supposed to be important to rest of the storyline, but apparently it was. Also, I assume George can see X's ghost because X was his spirit guide earlier.
