The gardner line is a callback to Dr. Light's reasoning for giving Proto Man a blaster. After Mega Man's quip from a few days earlier, I decided to do something similar with Proto Man. His loss sprite isn't quite so devastated, but looked to me more like someone trying to explain to his girlfriend how she got an STD.
