I suppose the argument behind X's statement here is that if George hadn't traveled back in time, he wouldn't have been able to warn Nate about Helmut's attack, and they would have been completely unprepared. Also, if George didn't go back in time, he would've died from the explosive nanobots, and he wouldn't be around to stop Bob from destroying the solar system at the end of the comic. So, yeah, I guess he really did need to go back.
