I stole this from Star Trek: Generations, where the Klingons are able to use the modulation of the Enterprise's shields to penetrate them. I'm not really sure how that applies to magically-created fire shields, but I'm sure the principle is the same. I'm not really sure if I expected the fans to believe that Bob would curl up into the fetal position upon realization of defeat, or if they'd see right through his little deception (and mine).
