Often people forget that sometimes the characters in their favorite shows or books don't necessarily know everything they know because the circumstances haven't allowed for them to be informed of the current situation. In this case, readers have probably forgotten that X has only met a few of the characters in the comic, so there's no way he could know who Ran is.
