I suppose there will come a time when readers of this comic will be unfamiliar with the use of a VCR, but often when using such devices, the image would be distorted for various reasons, and the user would often have to adjust the "tracking" to produce a watchable image. Early VCRs had manual tracking, but as the technology progressed, VCRs would generally capable of automatic tracking, which tended to work most of the time.
