It could be pointed out that George is probably already merged with the Shadowy Author, so he has every right to be at the top of the screen like that. In fact, one could argue that that's how he's done it, assuming it's not just comic silliness. Also, even though the Author outright says that George is supposed to be lost somewhere in time, people still didn't pick up that George had disappeared from this timeline. Admittedly, he might have been referring to being stuck in this time period, but he's not.
