While the Cataclysm first started bubbling in my brain, I didn't intend to let any of the original series characters survive. But then I started thinking about it, and I realized it could work to have one of them survive, to possibly tell Zero of what happened. And, let's be honest, if any of them were to survive, it'd be Proto Man. Of course, that would suggest that Zero is talking about Prometheus here, who we do eventually meet, though he's not an "old robot master". But that can be forgiven as something Zero has actually mixed up with an anime he was watching.
