It might be a little surprising that Dr. Light would care so much, but it's possible he was keeping track of George's activities in the past and noticed that the time suit was destroyed, meaning that he has no idea where George is now or what's happened to him. And, technically, it is all his fault, so he might feel a little bad about it. I mean, as long as he was keeping track of George, he probably felt like what he had done was okay, but now that he's lost George, the severity of what he's done has finally hit him. And we wonder why he drinks.
