Much like how Mynd was confident in the ability of his shields to protect him from Bob's blaster attack, I think Bob was expecting his shields to withstand Mynd's beam saber. Unfortunately, as is evident from his exclamation in the last panel, Mynd's sword was just a wee bit stronger than Bob was expecting. By the way, that flash you see in the second panel is supposed to be Bob's shielding activating just before he got hit. While you might not think it did him any good, seeing as how he got hurt anyway, I would point out that it did prevent him from being sliced in two.
