It was around this time that a very bad thing happened to my computer. It was a very pretty day in May, and I was sitting at my computer putting a comic together. Suddenly, all the power went out. I took a quick look out my apartment's windows to find that apparently all the power in my apartment complex had gone out due to some electrical work being done in a neighboring apartment building. I had no idea how long the power outage would last, so I went for a walk, had some dinner, and sat down to read a book with the ambient late afternoon sunlight. And then, without warning, the lights came back on! Yay! Unfortunately, I hadn't thought to unplug my computer during the outage to prevent damage due to an errant power surge... there was a sudden whirring noise, a pop, and a puff of smoke... My surge protector offered no protection against the power surge, and it fried my computer. After assessing the damage, I believe it took out my motherboard, my CPU, and my RAM. Luckily the hard drive and other peripherials, and I was able to rush to work and borrow a spare computer that I could use to access the hard drive and continue working. Of course, that was only the beginning of my computer woes due to this one incident. |
