The concept of ethical programming is straight from Star Trek, specifically Data's final run-in with Lore in the season six finale/season seven premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Though I like how I worked that whole random shooting-Mega-Man-in-the-head thing into this explanation, as though I planned it from the beginning.
