I suppose what the force field does is disintegrate anything that touches it. So as it slowly shrinks in on you, it touches your outside first, followed by moving closer and closer to your most protected parts. I can't imagine how incredibly painful that would be. If you really didn't have a way out of it, it might be better to just jump head-first into it, to get it over with as quickly as possible.
