The best lies are ones that make sense, the ones you want to believe. It would be totally reasonable for George to start wearing a helmet if he had, in fact, been training (in Acapulco) for the last six months in preparation for Helmut's attack. It makes sense that now that time has caught up with George, he's returned ready for battle. After all, he knows Helmut can't attack until after he left for the past, right? Otherwise, he'd remember that.
