If you can't destroy the Met Demon from the outside, due to its impenetrable skin, the only option is to destroy its core from the inside, after being swallowed. George/Helmut knew that Proto Man wouldn't have survived the blast inside the Met Demon, so he had to force Proto Man out first. The only question is whether or not the real George would've been that smart. George's line in the last panel is an homage to a recurring Jon Lovitz character (Master Thespian) from his years on SNL.
