While Dr. Wily might be to blame for initiating this sequence of events by stealing Stalin's brain, my goal was to make the entire kidnapping of Kalinka an accident and have Dr. Wily be innocent of the whole thing. As mentioned previously, Dr. Wily gave up his evil ways, so I had to have the situations force themselves on him. In this case, it meant that Kalinka had to end up stuck at Dr. Wily's fortress so it would appear from an outside perspective that she had been kidnapped. Getting stuck in the vents because your robot keeps breaking seemed like a good way to do that.
