One idea I was toying with during the White Space comics is that the afterimages are supposed to reflect the state of mind of the source. So if you go back and look at some of the comics in this storyline, you'll see that as Proto Man gets more irritated, his afterimages are more chaotic. In the same way, the Author is always in control and confident, so most of his afterimages are nice and steady. And since Mega Man's an idiot, his are all over the place, with no rhyme or reason to their placement. Well, except in the last panel above, since I thought it would be awesome for Mega Man to be facing himself.
