Shadow Man's line about where confusion leads is an allusion to what Yoda says in the original Star Wars Trilogy, about how fear leads to hate and ultimately leads to the Dark Side. Here, we have confusion ultimately leading to distraction, but not before leading to confusion again. I'm not sure how that works, but I think that's the point.
